Have you been thinking about getting backyard chickens?  If you have, there are some things that you need to know before you get them!  I love the convenience of having fresh, organic eggs anytime that I need them.  After all, it is such a bummer when you go to make brownies and you discover you don’t have enough eggs, right?  But there is more to having backyard chickens than just fresh eggs daily! I should mention that people ask me sometimes whether having backyard chickens saves us money (on eggs).  By the time we feed,...

How to Have Fresh, Organic Eggs (Without Going to the Store)

Hello, peeps!  Today I thought I’d talk to you about how to have fresh, organic eggs without going to the store!  Sound too good to be true?  It isn’t!  One of the best things my husband and I do in the name of emergency preparedness is have chickens in our backyard. We have a never ending supply of fresh eggs,  which gives us a good protein source in case of a serious emergency where we could not go to the store.   By the time we feed and house the chickens I don’t really think they save us much money, but...

Considering Getting Baby Chicks?

We just got a few new baby chicks last week because the chickens we have are getting older and will probably stop laying soon.  We love having chickens for a lot of reasons…greater self-sufficiency, better emergency preparedness since eggs are a great source of protein, fresh eggs available all the time so I never have to run to the store just because I need eggs and we ran out, not to mention chickens are just really fun to watch! Anyway, we have gotten pretty used to our “farm fresh” eggs…so we decided it was time to go pick out some...

Tour of Our Chicken Coop and Meet Our Hens :)

My husband, David, takes you on a little tour of our chicken coop and lets you meet our chickens!  (My husband and I are starting to have fun with video blogging (vlogging), so please humor us as we share this video!)  You can meet “the girls” (our hens) and check out their winter digs at our home here in suburban Salt Lake City, Utah.  We finally got some snow on Christmas and it got colder—feels more like winter now.  P.S. They don’t like snow!   NEW:  Now you can follow us on YouTube—click the YouTube button in the share menu on...

Problems Integrating Chickens

Yeah…so that integrating the new chickens thing…not so much working out there.  One of our younger chickens (who has earned her place as my new favorite), Jemima, was apparently pecked pretty good by the older hens.  She is a bit wounded now, so we had to bring her to “hen hospital” (a crate in the bathtub!).  At the hen hospital, she gets 24 hour nursing care 🙂   Poor Jemima 🙁           Problems Integrating Chickens     Here she is at the hen hospital after problems integrating the chickens…           What to Do If a...

Move-In Day for the New Chickens!

Recently our new chickens were finally big enough that we could start letting them spend time outside more and also let them move into the coop with the rest of “the girls”.   Those of you that have chickens know that this is not as easy as it sounds!  The four older hens rule the roost and were not so welcoming to the three newcomers.  We have been gradually letting them have more and more time together (supervised to keep the little ones from getting pecked) and when we can’t be out by the coop to referee, we have a dog...

Baby Chicks!

Lately our hens aren’t giving us as many eggs as they used to, so my husband decided that we need more of them.  Do you know any tricks to make your hens lay eggs more often?  My husband makes German Pancakes A LOT, so we go through eggs like crazy.  So far our only solution is to get more chicks!  These are the chicks we got a few weeks ago…just three…aren’t they so adorable???  Here’s little Miss Butterfly, a gold star (sex linked, so yellow=girl)…my three year old daughter named her…   …and this is Jemima, Blue Cochin…     …and here...

The Girls in the Coop

Around this time last year, my husband starting talking about how he would like to get some chickens.  Now mind you we already had six kids including a 2 year old, full time jobs, and two dogs here at our little homestead!  Now only half of the six kids reside here, but still…you know how it is when you are a mom and feel like you have too many balls in the air.  I told my husband I would really like him to wait a few years (and if I was lucky, he might forget about it). Not long after that, the...
