Taco Pizza. Yum! My mouth is watering just thinking about making this recipe. Now, I love pizza. Honestly I could probably eat pizza every day and be very happy doing it—there are so many yummy varieties. That said, my homemade taco pizza recipe is amazing (if I do say so myself!) and if you like tacos then you are gonna love this. It is the perfect union of pizza and Mexican food, which is another one of my favorites! Sounds good, right? Well, read on, my friend!
Taco Pizza Recipe
Now I should mention sometimes I make the sauce from scratch, sometimes I use canned. If I use canned sauce, I usually use Hunt’s Garlic and Herb spaghetti sauce with a pinch of fennel seed added. I pretty much always make my own dough (in the bread maker cuz I am lazy like that!), but if you don’t want to do that, you could easily buy some ready-made crust or defrost a loaf of Rhode’s frozen bread dough (just defrost it, don’t let it rise) and use that. [PS…If you don’t have a bread maker, you really need to get one. They are wonderful!!]
While you have your dough prepping in the breadmaker is a good time to brown and then drain your ground beef, then add a little water and the taco seasoning (follow the directions on the package of taco seasoning). After the taco meat is done cooking, keep it warm til you are ready to put it on the pizza.
Taco Pizza Ingredients:
- Pizza dough
- Pizza sauce
- 3 c shredded mozzarella cheese
- 3/4 c shredded cheddar cheese
- 2 cans refried beans
- 1 head of iceburg lettuce, finely chopped
- 1/2-3/4 lb taco meat (prepared as directed on taco seasoning package)
- 1 package of taco seasoning (for preparing the taco meat)
- 1/2-3/4 c water (for preparing the taco meat)
- 1 medium-sized tomato, diced
- 1 small can sliced black olives
- 1/2 c coarsely crushed tortilla chips
- sour cream and salsa for garnish, if desired
What to Do:
So for this recipe, you start out making a basic cheese pizza. You use whatever dough and sauce you want…homemade (which I prefer) or not. Once you have made your pizza dough, you are ready to make your pizza! If you are cooking on a pizza stone (which I strongly recommend), lightly flour the preheated stone. If you don’t have a stone, you can make it on a cookie sheet, lightly spray the cookie sheet with cooking spray and then press out the dough on the cookie sheet. Again, I recommend the stone…makes the bottom of your crust…well…crusty!
Using your hands and / or a rolling pin, shape the dough into a flat circle, then place it in the middle of the preheated pizza stone and using a rolling pin or your fingers, gradually press out the dough until it covers the whole pizza stone (be careful…don’t burn yourself!).
Using a large spoon spread around the marinara or you can always use jarred sauce if you are feeling lazy…cuz let’s face it…we are all lazy sometimes. Use just enough sauce to make a very thin layer. Note: I use homemade sauce most of the time cuz…well, I think jarred sauce is sub-par. If I am going to use a jar I usually use Hunt’s garlic and herb pasta sauce. Technically I guess it is canned, not jarred…whatevs. You get the point Helpful tip: Whatever sauce is leftover you can seal in a freezer bag til next time (be sure to squeeze out any extra air)!
Anyway, after you finish that step, sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese all across the top of your pizza, followed by the shredded cheddar cheese…
Using two spoons, place spoonfuls of the warmed refried beans all over the pizza, then gently spread it around to cover the entire pizza. The warmed refried beans will hold your lettuce on nicely. The next toppings, in order, are taco meat, diced tomato, black olive, and then crushed tortilla chips. Your freshly made taco pizza is ready to serve!
Now you can cut your pizza with your pizza cutter (in a pinch kitchen scissors works!). Once on the plate, you can garnish with sour cream and a little drizzle of your favorite salsa if you want—I recommend it! The flavors together are amazing!!!!

- Using two spoons, gently place spoonfuls of the warmed refried beans all over the pizza, then carefully spread the refried beans around to cover the entire pizza.
- Next you will put your lettuce on. Use however much you like. The warmed refried beans will hold your lettuce on nicely.
